Healthcare

Hospitals and healthcare clinics stand to benefit the most from wireless networking because the nature of information handled by healthcare providers is simultaneously dynamic, dispersed, and critical. In most basic terms, the benefits of successfully accessing the correct information at right place and at the right time include:

  • Providing better patient care

  • Serving more patients with existing resources

  • Saving money

In today’s environment of increasing healthcare costs, the combination of information accuracy and timeliness is imperative in order to minimize costs of delivering healthcare while maximizing the quality of patient care.  Traditional “hardwired” networks are simply too restrictive and cannot properly support the dynamic demands of today’s healthcare physicians, patients, providers, and administrators.

Here are some examples of how wireless networks can benefit healthcare providers:

  • More Accurate Administration of Medication-  Nurses use wireless scanners to scan patients’ ID bracelets, the barcodes on the medications, and the nurses’ own ID badges.  This " 3-way scan" checks information against patient's electronic medical records to ensure that it's the correct medicine, does, time, and double-check for allergies and adverse drug interactions.  There are many benefit of this system, including less workload on over-worked nurses and reduce risk of adverse patient reactions from wrong medication.  If a prescription was changed or canceled, the nurse would know immediately since the wireless scanner is connected to patient management systems via the wireless network.

  • Improved Patient Bedside Care-  Physicians and nurses use wirelessly connected laptops to access instantly applications and data for accurate management of patient care and progress.  Patient dietary and nutritional information can be tracked more closely to ensure proper patient care and progress.

  • Well-Monitored Intensive Care Units (ICU’s) and Emergency Rooms (ER’s)-  Wireless cameras are used to monitor patient status.  Since ICU’s and ER’s are typically extremely busy and crowded, wireless cameras are extremely effective at keeping track of multiple patients at one time.  Since physicians and nurses can view camera images from anywhere, during busy times, ICU and ER staff can quickly solicit help from other healthcare providers to monitor patient status.

  • Improved Physicians, Nurses Provider Productivity-  Physicians, nurses, and administrators use wirelessly connected laptops, PC tablets, and personal digital assistants (PDA’s) to access immediately time-sensitive information from anywhere.  While connected to the wireless network, nurses can avoid re-entering paperwork, check patient information such as lab results, verify prescriptions when dispensing medicine, and use voice-over-IP phones to respond to call buttons from anywhere.
